Intermediate Lesson 9 of 11

Model Context Protocol

An open standard for connecting AI agents to tools and data sources.

Every tool used to need its own custom connection to every AI app. Model Context Protocol, or MCP, is a shared way to describe tools and data so any compatible agent can use them. A company writes one connector for its system. Then any agent that speaks MCP can use it, within the permissions the company sets.

Think of it as

Like a standard plug socket. Any appliance with the right plug works, without rewiring the house each time.

Example

A company builds one MCP connector for its inventory system. Its support agent, its sales assistant and a developer's coding agent can all check stock through that same connector.
