encoder
a model that reads text and turns it into meaning, without writing
An encoder reads a whole piece of text at once and builds a numeric summary of its meaning. It does not generate new text. Encoders are used for classifying, searching and comparing text. They are usually smaller and faster than text-writing models.
Think of it as
A careful reader who understands a letter fully but never writes back.
