point cloud

the 3D picture a LiDAR builds, made of single measured points

Each LiDAR measurement becomes one point in space at the measured distance. Thousands of points together show the shape of the road, vehicles and people. Software then looks for objects in it. A missing point is a gap in what the machine can see.

Think of it as

A picture drawn only with dots, where each dot marks a spot the laser touched.
