LiDAR
a sensor that measures distance with laser light
A LiDAR sends out short laser flashes and times how long each takes to bounce back. Half that time, multiplied by the speed of light, gives the distance. Repeating this across a scene builds a 3D picture. Self-driving vehicles and robots use it to see people and objects.
Think of it as
Shouting into a canyon and judging its width by how long the echo takes to return.
